Ash Wednesday begins our journey into Lent—a season of honesty, repentance, and hope. Tonight we gather not to pretend we have it all together, but to tell the truth about who we are: dust, fragile, and deeply in need of grace. The ashes placed on our foreheads are a visible reminder of our mortality and our sin, but they are also a sign that God meets us precisely there, in our weakness and need.

In a loud and hurried world, Ash Wednesday invites us to slow down and listen again to the voice of God. Through Scripture, prayer, and the ancient words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return,” we are called back to what matters most. This is not a night of shame, but of return—a turning of our hearts toward the God who is merciful and compassionate, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love.

As Narrative Church, we come as a people rooted in the story of Jesus, who entered fully into our dust and carried it all the way to the cross. Lent does not end in ashes; it leads us to resurrection. Tonight we begin this path together—honest, hopeful, and held by grace—as God continues to shape us, renew us, and send us into the world bearing the life of Christ.
